You listened to our ideas, wishes and hopes, and designed an extension that provided flexibility for a new kitchen and living area

The owners approached us following a recommendation from a previous client. We met the property owners free of charge to establish the parameters of their brief and to give them some idea of our previous work.

At the outset of the project the client confirmed that they had unsuccessfully tried to sell their property due to the disproportionate size of the kitchen space in comparison to the rest of the house. This can be a common problem in houses that have been previously extended, providing more bedrooms as was the case with this property.

The client also met with 2 or 3 other architects, explained their brief and obtained quotations from all and struggled to choose who they wanted to use. They had eliminated all but ourselves and 1 other architect and requested that we both produced sketch design proposals for their consideration, something more usual in larger projects.

We produced our design scheme proposals and took the owners to view one of our previous projects which identified similarities to their project.

Following this, we were formally appointed to progress to lodging a planning application, building regulations application and to coordinate the appointment of a Structural Engineer to detail the significant structural modifications required.

The design solution involved the painstaking removal of the entire corner of the house at ground floor level, taking great care to provide an un interrupted structural design that created an open plan kitchen/living arrangement.

The project was delivered on time, with a limited budget.

The client considered that the project was a great success and given that their initial idea was to provide the extension to make sure they could go on to sell the property, they decided that they now loved their property that much that they decided to stay where they were.

A great testament to a successful project.
